A Journey to the Heart of Flavor: Traditional Turkish Cuisine

Turkish cuisine is not just about kebabs. It’s a feast of flavors born from centuries of history, different civilizations, and fertile lands. From olive oil dishes to spicy meat meals and countless desserts, we’ve compiled what you need to know for this journey of taste.

Traditional Turkish Dishes

The richness of Turkish cuisine comes from the unique dishes of its seven geographical regions. Thanks to this variety, it’s possible to find a flavor that appeals to every palate.

  • Zeytinyağlılar (Olive Oil Dishes): A staple of Aegean and Mediterranean cuisine, olive oil dishes are healthy and light options. Among the most popular are Zeytinyağlı Enginar (artichokes in olive oil), Barbunya Pilaki (red kidney bean salad), and Yaprak Sarma (stuffed vine leaves) served with garlicky yogurt.
  • İskender Kebap: This signature dish from Bursa is prepared by layering thin slices of doner meat over pieces of pita bread. It’s served by drizzling melted butter and tomato sauce on top. The side of yogurt enhances its flavor.
  • Mantı: The jewel of Kayseri cuisine, mantı consists of small dough dumplings served with a yogurt and spiced butter sauce. Handmade mantı reflects the finesse of Turkish cuisine.
  • Karnıyarık: One of the most delicious forms of eggplant, Karnıyarık is a main dish where eggplants are hollowed out and stuffed with minced meat, onions, tomatoes, and peppers. It is usually served with rice pilaf.
